What is special about 6D Helmets

6D History

6D Helmets was founded in 2011. Two years later, they released the original ATR-1 helmet, a revolutionary innovation in helmet design that forced everyone to rethink helmet safety. 6D Helmet's ATR-2 took another huge step forward when it was launched in 2018. After five years of research and development, the ATR-3 builds on the strengths of the previous two models and has been further improved in almost every aspect.

ODS

ODS technology is an active in-helmet system that reduces the force of energy transferred to the brain in a collision. Eleven years ago, 6D was the only helmet manufacturer with special technology for rotational impact management, i.e. helmet-specific oblique impact mitigation. ATR-1 contains 27 elastomer dampers. ATR-2 correspondingly 11 dampers, and now ATR-3 uses only six renewed dampers. In the past, dampers were glued to the helmet. Now there is no glue in the system, which facilitates the manufacturing process and improves quality

Elastomer dampers

The dampers regulate the rotational shift between the inner and outer shell. Their primary function is to control displacement during loading and return the helmet to its natural position. The dampers of the ATR-3 have been completely redesigned and have a different role than before. The newer design is freer and allows the inner liner to move more easily in the helmet. The dampers are longer and can stretch more, which increases the movement of the suspension. A bit like if you get a longer travel for your shock absorbers. 6D is the only helmet with two separate damping layers.

Testing

6D took the ATR-3 helmet to third-party testing labs to compare the new model with its own previous models and those of its competitors. The goal is to smooth out the curve of the graph and protect the brain from spikes in energy transfer. At low speeds, the ATR-3 helmet ranked close to the ATR-2, and at high speeds, the ATR-3 performed significantly better than the ATR-2. In both situations, the 6D ATR-3 was far ahead of the competition.

Renewed design

When you put the ATR-2 and ATR-3 side by side, they look very similar in size. The shape is slightly different, the ATR-2 has more mass at the back and the ATR-3 has a more modern style. The padding inside the ATR-3 is also more comfortable, with added padding at the top of the eye opening for added comfort.

Rebuildable

6D is the only brand that can rebuild your helmet after a crash. The internal EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam is designed to provide maximum protection in a single impact. On the 6D, it's easy to check and replace. The shell of the helmet is checked at the same time, and the condition of the repair is that the shell is intact. ATR-3 additional features

The new ATR-3 has a clear plastic piece that attaches to the visor and extends it 3 inches for riding in rain/mud. The end of the chinstrap has a magnetic fastening instead of a button for comfort and ease of use. In addition, the nose guard is easily removable and the helmet has space for headphones near the ears.
